All things that are good cometh of God

Recently the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints made a few announcements that seemed to cause a bit of what can only be described in my opinion as mass hysteria until further explanation brought understanding, and pondering brought peace. Well, it brought understand and peace for me at least. I know others still struggle. I am trying to be more compassionate to the struggle.

Here is a link to Understanding the Handbook, and a link to the interview with Elder Christofferson regarding the Handbook Changes

I understand that the topic of same-gender attraction is emotional, personal, and often heart-breaking, and can be seen from many different perspectives. However I do not understand a statement made recently by a disenchanted Mormon acquaintance of mine. She said she has left the church because she no longer recognizes the church she once loved. I can't help but ask, really? Really it is unrecognizable?

In 1995 the First Presidency issued "The Family, A Proclamation to the World" which states,

"We solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children".

Twenty years ago this was not a radical idea. Today however society is trying to tell me this is a bigoted belief and I should instead get with the times.

I'm not writing this blog to argue what is sin or normal human behavior. What I am concerned about is the statement  by a once faithful member that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has changed so dramatically she doesn't recognize it. The world has changed. The world has changed, not the Church. I'm concerned that it is a tactic of distraction by the Adversary.  A distraction from the work the Savior Himself gave for His faithful followers to do.

Two scriptures come to mind...

Moroni 7:12-16
12 Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually.
13 But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.
14 Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.
15 For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.
16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.
--------------------------
Matthew 7:16-20
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but acorrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewndown, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

This morning I read a story in the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church- Ezra T Benson about the creation of what is now known as the Welfare Program created in 1936 during the Depression. In 1946 he was assigned to go to Europe after the war.

"As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, he was assigned to preside over the Church in Europe just after World War II. In those war-torn lands, he led the Church’s effort to provide goods that would help people regain their self-sufficiency. He recounted his experience when the Church’s first shipment of welfare supplies arrived in Berlin, Germany:
“I took with me the acting president of the mission, President Richard Ranglack. We walked to the old battered warehouse which, under armed guard, housed the precious welfare goods. At the far end of the warehouse we saw the boxes piled almost to the ceiling.
“‘Are those boxes of food?’ Richard said. ‘Do you mean to tell me those are boxes full of food?’
“‘Yes, my brother,’ I replied, ‘food and clothing and bedding—and, I hope, a few medical supplies.’
“Richard and I took down one of the boxes. We opened it. It was filled with the commonest of common foods—dried beans. As that good man saw it, he put his hands into it and ran it through his fingers, then broke down and cried like a child with gratitude.
“We opened another box, filled with cracked wheat, nothing added or taken away, just as the Lord made it and intended it to be. He touched a pinch of it to his mouth. After a moment he looked at me through his tearful eyes—and mine were wet, too—and he said, while slowly shaking his head, ‘Brother Benson, it is hard to believe that people who have never seen us could do so much for us.’
“That’s the Lord’s system! Voluntary donations motivated by brotherly love and willing sacrifice, and assisting others to help themselves. Such ensures dignity and self-respect.”
(chapter 21 Teachings of the Presidents of the Church- Ezra T Benson

Just this week the Mormon Newsroom released an article and video with Elder Ballard visiting refugees in Europe. The article discusses the aid that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is offering.
"Our help is to bring a little bit of dignity, a little bit of peace, and reassurance, to a people who have made a great journey across the water..." Elder Ballard also said, "the Lord has made it clear that one of the great responsibilities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is that we are to feed the hungry and the poor, to reach out and take care of them."

I'm not claiming that I belong to a church that has perfect people who act perfect all the times. I will claim that I belong to a church that for over a century has reached out in compassion worldwide, and I am grateful that has not changed. That is the mission of the church, and the mission of the church is alive and well.
The Sunday School lesson I read part of this morning included the following verses in 2 Peter chapter 1...
"2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."

At the end of this week of Thanksgiving, I express gratitude for my Savior Jesus Christ, and to be part of a church that bears his name and strives to show brotherly kindness and charity.

Standing Firm, a Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith

Mosiah Chapter 4
19 For behold, are we not all beggars? Do we not all depend upon the same Being, even God, for all the substance which we have, for both food and raiment, and for gold, and for silver, and for all the riches which we have of every kind?
20 And behold, even at this time, ye have been calling on his name, and begging for a remission of your sins. And has he suffered that ye have begged in vain? Nay; he has poured out his Spirit upon you, and has caused that your hearts should be filled with joy, and has caused that your mouths should be stopped that ye could not find utterance, so exceedingly great was your joy.
21 And now, if God, who has created you, on whom you are dependent for your lives and for all that ye have and are, doth grant unto you whatsoever ye ask that is right, in faith, believing that ye shall receive, O then, how ye ought to impart of the substance that ye have one to another.

and

 Alma Chapter 7
11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.

and

Matthew Chapter 7
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

The first two scriptures are from the Book of Mormon. They are some of my favorite passages that describe the saving power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I believe the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I believe that a man called by God translated the Book of Mormon, his name is Joseph Smith.  The scripture in Matthew tells us that we can discern between good and evil by the fruits of the work. I hope that my own life stands as a testimony to the goodness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which in this modern day I believe Joseph Smith helped usher in a restoration of.

An angel messenger told Joseph that his name would “be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues.” (JSH 1:33

John Taylor declared, “I testify before God, angels, and men, that [Joseph] was a good, honorable, [and] virtuous man— … [and] that his private and public character was unimpeachable—and that he lived and died as a man of God.”(D&C 135:3)

There are two questions I want to address that many of my faith have struggled with.  Can Joseph Smith be a prophet if there were so many different accounts of the First Vision? How can you not find your faith shaken to know Joseph Smith used a seer stone to aid in his translation of ancient records?

Can Joseph Smith be a prophet if there were so many different accounts of the First Vision?

This article gives an good explanation of all the different versions of the First Vision.

"How many First Vision reports were made while the Prophet was alive?
It is better to ask how many independent accounts came from contact with the Prophet. Some vision narratives were republished and are really copies of an original record.
We now know of nine contemporary reports from the Prophet himself or from those who personally heard him relate his first vision: (1) the Prophet’s handwritten description in 1832, an attempt to start a manuscript history of the Church; (2) a Church secretary’s brief 1835 journal entry of Joseph talking with a visitor who called himself Joshua, the Jewish minister; (3) the 1838 history discussed above, published in 1842 and now in the Pearl of Great Price; (4) Orson Pratt’s publication, the first publicly disseminated, of the Prophet’s vision in his Interesting Account of Several Remarkable Visions, issued in 1840 in Edinburgh, Scotland; (5) Orson Hyde’s revision of Orson Pratt’s pamphlet, published in 1842 for German readers and adding some insights that may have come from his contact with Joseph Smith; (6) the Wentworth Letter, created in response to editor John Wentworth’s inquiry and published by Joseph Smith in 1842 in Times and Seasons; this account adapted parts of Orson Pratt’s pamphlet; (7) Levi Richards’s diary about Joseph Smith preaching in the summer of 1843 and repeating the Lord’s first message to him that no church was His; (8) a newspaper interview in the fall of 1843; (9) Alexander Neibaur’s 1844 journal entry of a conversation at the Prophet’s house."

I won't go into all the details of the versions, you can find and read each for yourself. I think the point is that there are narratives made from those who heard him, and those narratives were copied, and copied, and copied...and as we know things change. And then there are reports written directly for publication.

I have a personal example of records I've made that vary. Last month I attended General Conference at the Conference Center. I blogged about it with pictures and stories of what messages I heard from the speakers, and my general impressions. That was one version of my experience. In my personal journal however I added a lot more, and I wrote a lot of other things about people I spend time with and places I ate. I didn't need to mention in my blog that I had dinner at Black Bear Cafe with Elizabeth, but it still happened. My audience in my blog vs my journal is different.

Another example I thought of is the four gospels in the New Testament. The Gospel of John doesn't talk about the birth of the Savior and the annunciation made to the shepherds. Were their really shepherds if John didn't mention them? Matthew, Mark, and Luke don't mention the wedding at Cana. Did the miracle there with the wine not happen? The four gospels cover the life of Jesus, but do not emphasize all the events equally.

The previously mentioned article says,
“The biggest trap is comparing description in one report with silence in another. By assuming that what is not said is not known, some come up with arbitrary theories of an evolution in the Prophet’s story. Yet we often omit parts of an episode because of the chance of the moment, not having time to tell everything, or deliberately stressing only a part of the original event in a particular situation.”

Elder Jeffery R. Holland gave a talk titled "Safety for the Soul". It is his testimony of the prophetic call of Joseph Smith and the validity of the Book of Mormon. In reference to the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith he said,

"Never mind that their wives are about to be widows and their children fatherless. Never mind that their little band of followers will yet be “houseless, friendless and homeless” and that their children will leave footprints of blood across frozen rivers and an untamed prairie floor. 9 Never mind that legions will die and other legions live declaring in the four quarters of this earth that they know the Book of Mormon and the Church which espouses it to be true. Disregard all of that, and tell me whether in this hour of death these two men would enter the presence of their Eternal Judge quoting from and finding solace in a book which, if not the very word of God, would brand them as imposter's and charlatans until the end of time? They would not do that! They were willing to die rather than deny the divine origin and the eternal truthfulness of the Book of Mormon."

and in reference the validity of the Book of Mormon to the honest seeker of truth he said,

"In this I stand with my own great-grandfather, who said simply enough, “No wicked man could write such a book as this; and no good man would write it, unless it were true and he were commanded of God to do so.” 10 I testify that one cannot come to full faith in this latter-day work—and thereby find the fullest measure of peace and comfort in these, our times—until he or she embraces the divinity of the Book of Mormon and the Lord Jesus Christ, of whom it testifies. If anyone is foolish enough or misled enough to reject 531 pages of a heretofore unknown text teeming with literary and Semitic complexity without honestly attempting to account for the origin of those pages—especially without accounting for their powerful witness of Jesus Christ and the profound spiritual impact that witness has had on what is now tens of millions of readers—if that is the case, then such a person, elect or otherwise, has been deceived; and if he or she leaves this Church, it must be done by crawling over or under or around the Book of Mormon to make that exit. In that sense the book is what Christ Himself was said to be: “a stone of stumbling, … a rock of offence,” 11 a barrier in the path of one who wishes not to believe in this work. "

How can you not find your faith shaken to know Joseph Smith used a seer stone to aid in his translation of ancient records?

For me personally, if I believe that Joseph Smith was really given records kept buried for 1300 years in a hillside in the Eastern United States, by an angel, written by even more ancient civilizations, than how he translated them is of little consequence. (By the way I believe these things because I have read the book of Mormon and have received my own witness that it is truly the word of God.)

Here is an article about the Seer Stone.  Here is the detail that bugs a lot of people,

"In fact, historical evidence shows that in addition to the two seer stones known as “interpreters,” Joseph Smith used at least one other seer stone in translating the Book of Mormon, often placing it into a hat in order to block out light. According to Joseph’s contemporaries, he did this in order to better view the words on the stone."

As mere mortals we want physical evidence. Science teaches us to rigorously seek out evidence to support our theories. How many times in the scriptures do those with shaky faith ask for a sign? Here with Joseph Smith we have a mortal, making mistakes like everyone else, man. He was learning how to be a prophet. He had to learn how to receive revelation. Have you learned how to receive personal revelation in your own life? It takes practice, it takes humility. Sometimes it takes quiet. Sometimes it takes reading the word of God. Sometimes you can be driving down the road and have to pull over so you can write down a moment of inspiration before it fades away. Sometimes you have a moment of brilliance that only the Spirit of God can bring but then the fulfillment of the promise takes so long by mortal standards to come that you doubt and start demanding God to prove he will be true to the promise he made you. A prophet is receiving revelation for the whole world. Joseph Smith was a young man who had to be taught how to receive revelation. The scriptures are full of example of physical items that were used symbolically to perform miracles.

Moses hands held up overhead were used to beat Amulek.
Exodus 17:11
11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Moses held up a staff with a serpent on it to heal his people, Numbers 21:8-9.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

A woman was healed by touching the corner of Jesus clothes.
Luke 8
43 ¶And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.

Jesus used spit to heal a deaf man.
Mark 7
32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
 33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

Jesus used spittle and clay to heal a blind man, and then had him wash in the pool.
John 9
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

And finally in Ether we read of the brother of Jared asking the lord to touch stones to provide light while crossing the waters to the promised land.

Did the spit, the staff, the cloth, Moses hands, the clay have power? Did the physical things create the miracle? No, it was the power of God that provided the miracle. He tailors his miracles to the needs of the people. Joseph Smith used a stone to translate.

I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinithians chapter 1:

10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

No, they were not baptized to Paul, or Peter, or Joseph Smith. I see Joseph Smith as a prophet of God, but I was not baptized in his name. We are baptized in the name of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ.

I close with an account I wrote after visiting Nauvoo.

"There were only 4 others on the tour of the jail. They were not members of the church because one lady asked about Jon Smith. As we sat in the upstairs room where the mob came through, the missionary couple asked if any of us had a comment to make. Grandma talked about how she is a convert and looked into a lot of churches before being baptized (The Salvation Army being one of her favorites). Grandpa spoke of Joseph Smith's last prophecy that Dan Jones would go on to serve a mission and that those vigilantes/mob members whose hearts were ready for blood would have more blood shed then they could stand...the interpretation of which could lend itself to the Civil war. I decided that I wanted to share my testimony of the prophet of the restoration of the church of Jesus Christ. I referred to the short video we saw prior to the tour. In it a lady approached Joseph Smith and asked if he thought he was the savior of his people. He replied no, he was just a man. I was able to testify, and do so again now, that member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints do no worship Joseph Smith. We honor him, and hold him with high and great respect, "Praise to the Man", but we do not worship him. We honor him because of what he did, he brought the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ back into the world. He restored priesthood power which gives me access to the mercy and healing power of the Atonement. Everything Joseph Smith did pointed back to the Savior of the world. That is why I say "Praise to that man"."

Best Sunday of the Year- Primary Program!

Imagine this, a red-headed beauty, about 7 years old, sitting in the choir seats, striking long ballerina poses, twirling, and pumping her fist enthusiastically to the beat of the music.
That was just one of the many delights of the Primary Program last Sunday.

Each fall the Primary, the children's organization in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is in charge of the Sacrament meeting. After the sacrament is passed the children give all the talks, sing their hearts out, and bear testimony.  It is amazing to me the bold and pure doctrine that the children proclaim, and they do it with such conviction. I also feel the Spirit of God very strongly on these Primary Program Sundays.

Here are a few songs I was impressed with and the powerful words they sang.

I Know That My Savior Loves Me

(click on the song title to hear it)

1. A long time ago in a beautiful place,
Children were gathered ’round Jesus.
He blessed and taught as they felt of His love.
Each saw the tears on His face.
The love that He felt for His little ones
I know He feels for me.
I did not touch Him or sit on His knee,
Yet, Jesus is real to me

Chorus
I know He lives!  I will follow faithfully.
My heart I give to Him.
I know that my Savior loves me.

2. Now I am here in a beautiful place,
Learning the teachings of Jesus
Parents and teachers will help guide the way,
Lighting my path ev’ry day.
Wrapped in the arms of my Savior’s love,
I feel His gentle touch.
Living each day, I will follow His way,
Home to my Father above.
Chorus

Text:  Tami Jeppson Creamer & Derena Bell

The chorus was especially touching to me. They children sang it so loudly. What greater piece of knowledge can a child have then to know that their Savior loves them?

Scripture Power

1. Because I want to be like the Savior, and I can,
I’m reading His instructions, I’m following His plan.
Because I want the power His word will give to me,
I’m changing how I live, I’m changing what I’ll be

Chorus
Scripture power keeps me safe from sin.
Scripture power is the power to win.
Scripture power! Ev’ry day I need
The power that I get each time I read.

2. I’ll find the sword of truth in each scripture that I learn.
I’ll take the shield of faith from these pages that I turn.
I’ll wear each vital part of the armor of the Lord,
And fight my daily battles, and win a great reward.

He Sent His Son

Lyrics

  1. How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?
He sent his Son, a newborn babe, with peace and holiness.
How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go?
He sent his Son to walk with men on earth, that we may know.
How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death?
He sent his Son to die for us and rise with living breath.
What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say?
Have faith, have hope, live like his Son, help others on their way.
    What does he ask?
    Live like his Son.
What I like about this song is they sang it in two parts, one sang the question, then the other half of the group sang the response. Now that I look at the lyrics it is clear, but I am not sure I ever thought of this song as a question and answer song. I loved it.
What does he ask? Live like his Son.

    _____________

And finally I loved this one...

    The Church of Jesus Christ

    Lyrics

    1. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
      I know who I am.
      I know God's plan.
      I'll follow him in faith.
I believe in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
      I'll honor his name.
      I'll do what is right;
      I'll follow his light.
      His truth I will proclaim.

General Conference October 4, 2015

I woke up this morning at 6:30am on a Saturday worrying about people. After turning worry into prayer, I remembered I haven't blogged about my experience at General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints,  last weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I have never had the opportunity to go to conference. The chance presented itself, and decided to grab it. I was able to take a friend of mine ( who I took the pictures I'm using here), and who currently lives in Utah. We attended the Sunday Afternoon session on October 4, 2015.

Here are a few thoughts of my impressions of conference and my experience.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf started off the conference with a talk that asked some very good questions. Is my experience with the Gospel bringing me peace? (YES!) Are the fruits of the Gospel transforming our lives into the extraordinary? (I sure hope so.) And, Are we making our discipleship too complicated? (Probably). He said "Exaltation is our destination, Discipleship is our journey".

Elder M Russell Ballard reminded me that we cannot separate Christ from his servants. He reminded me that the Apostles are special witnesses, and I felt throughout the conference that they do this job well. He taught that my job is to focus on the witness they give, not dwell on the evidences of human nature in their lives, but view all men with grace that I am hoping the Savior is offering me.

I was also impressed with Saturday morning speakers in that many of them were converts or have a spouse that is a convert. Sister Neill Marriott even quoted a hymn from her Southern upbringing that touched her soul. I think I was sensitive to messages from converts and about converts because I watched so much of conference this time with a convert. There is a perspective that they bring to the Gospel that I so appreciate and was grateful to witness. Sister Marriott said, "God takes us as we are and makes us better".

Elder Robert D Hales reminded me once again that I need to be patient and wait upon the Lord. He also gave wise future marriage council, "None of marry perfection, we marry potential".

Elder Jeffery R. Holland hit it out of the park with a talk on the divine maternal role of mothers. It was extraordinary.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks spoke of the beauty of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

We watched the prophet Thomas S Monson struggle to physically finish his message. As my dad put it, he gave a bold but kindly delivered message on being a light to the world. He could barely hold himself standing by the end. As I thought about this later, feeling sad, I found beauty in it actually. Here is a man who has literally worn out his life in the service of the Master. He is going to fight until his last breathe to be the mouth-piece of the Lord on this earth, until his work is finished.

There was a great sense of sadness by the Apostles as many of them spoke of their love for Elder Perry, Packer, and Scott who all passed away since the last conference. Elder David A Bednar gave the very last address of conference and it was a beautiful tribute of the "lessons of a lifetime" from men that he loves in his Quorum. I enjoyed watching the 3 new apostles speak under their new mantle as special witnesses. There has been some talk among LDS people that it was wrong for the church to not call a more diverse group of new apostles. I for one am grateful that I belong to a faith that is guided by God, not by men who base decisions on popularity. When Elder Rasband was speaking I had a moment where I felt the Spirit testify to me of his call as a special witness. We can each receive our own witness of everything that the Lord reveals to his people.

In the session I attended I was grateful to hear Elder D. Todd Christofferson speak about the church as a the Body of Christ. He said the church is used to carry out the immortality and eternal life of man, and that we have a conversion to Christ not to the church but the church helps get us there. It was excellent!

Elder Devin Durrant gave some of the most practical scripture advise and coined the phrase "Ponderize". He challenged me to find a weekly scripture to ponder on that will help "provide an uplifting place for your heart to go" during the week.

Other impressions...

I enjoyed two songs by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. One on Saturday afternoon and one in person on Sunday. If the Savior Stood Beside Me (click here) and  Our God is a God of Love (click here)

I think my favorite part about going to conference in person was going with my friend who was seeing it all (temple square and being around 1,000's of Mormons, and literally watching his first conference ever) with fresh eyes. It was delightful! It helped me look at it with fresh eyes. For example we went to the visitors center with the Christus statue. That visitors center is literally centered around Christ. Downstairs you have curved wall with a display of giant paintings of the life of Jesus. As you walk to the end of the artwork you come to a spiral ramp that goes up to the Christus statue. You end up in this magnificent room that portrays the universe in all it's richness and beauty and a giant statue of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. It is breathtaking.

I loved my experience going to conference live. I loved seeing the apostles enter and leave with their wives. I loved the feeling of being around 1000's of those who share my faith. I love the feeling of joy and happiness of those around me as I walked in the crowd on temple square. I loved sharing it with a friend. I enjoyed it very much. I learned however that the Spirit I felt at the conference center is the same Spirit I feel in my own home. My home is sacred and I can receive sacred revelation from the Holy Ghost in my home, I didn't have to be on temple square.

I will close is blog with a phrase from the opening prayer at the Sunday afternoon session. Elder Jorg Klebingat (who gave this awesome talk in October 2014) prayed that we will "close the gap between what we know and feel, and what we are doing and becoming". I think that sums up my take away from conference. There is much I know and feel, now I need it put in more work to help me do and become a better disciple of Christ.

How to Bloom Where You Are Planted? Treat Yourself

How does one Bloom Where They Are Planted you ask? Well it's quite simple, you find joy in the simple things and in the words of Manny P, you treat yourself!

I had a fantastic day today, I celebrated me. I know, that's a bit cocky and not at all humble. I'm cool with that.

First thing this morning I went to Ken's Taco's for my favorite bacon, egg, potato breakfast taco which I ate while opening a gift a friend sent me over 2 months ago. It was a gorgeous charm. I think it should be my new theme! "Let Go! Let God." I was very touched with a message that speaks to my soul.

Next stop in treating yourself, move all your patient's to the end of the day and go to your favorite class a the gym and punch like a BEAST with a fantastic instructor who even played a birthday song for when I walked in.

Then I went to another class! Pound, where you literally pound with these rip sticks for 45 minutes doing squats, lunges, and all kinds of stuff.  It's loud and a blast!

Thank goodness I did a double workout, because shortly after I arrived home I got a call from Tiff Treats to see when they could deliver my cookies. Hot cookies and ice cream delivered to my door? Yes please! It was fabulous!

But the treats don't stop! In addition to today being my birthday, it was also National Ice Cream Cone day and Sonic had 1/2 off waffle cones all day. How could I resist? Yes please!

And if the universe wasn't already in my favor, look what gas cost a gallon?

And a treat yo'self birthday wouldn't be complete without my parents and Costco Cheesecake.

See's Candy anyone? Build your own box of chocolates is an awesome gift!

Used sample bottle of paint? Is that all that was in there? Just kidding. A symbolic gift to represent paint for my future house! Awesome!

Birth minute, captured!

When it's all said and done, besides stuffing my face all day, the real awesomeness of all the love I felt from friends and family all over the country. It's easy to Bloom Where You Are Planted when you have lots of love!
